Days of the Week in German

Samstag in German is Saturday in English and comes from the Greek older word sabbaton which is closely related to Sabbath. Lastly, Sonntag (Sunday) was derived from a German word Sonne meaning sun. Therefore, Sonntag literally means “sun day.” Thus the word Sunday in English. You can see how German and English are related. Using German Days of the Week Basic Rules

1.In German, Montag or ‘Monday’ is the first day of the week. As you speak

the language, make sure that you understand the order of the days clearly. Some places refer to Sunday as the first day of the week.

2.The days of the week in German are usually capitalized. There is one

exception, however: in situations where you want to express that something happens on a particular day every week. In such a case, you don’t capitalize the first letter of the day as with many German nouns and you simply add an ‘s’ to make it plural.

Examples:

1.All German nouns have gender and the days of the week fall under masculine. Therefore, they take masculine articles der (the) and ein (a).

German am (English on) is used to indicate that something is happening

1.To denote ‘from ……. to…’, use “von … bis …”

There are abbreviations for the German days of the week just like in English. Infact, it is very easy to abbreviate German days of the week. You just pick the first two letters.

1.If you want to say that something happens on each specific day in a week

repetitively, you use ‘every’ which is ‘jeden’ in German.
